Junior News – Update 24th August

After a busy summer of activity both in our club and outside with a lot of tennis played we are coming to the end.
July in the tennis club was a very busy month with our Parks summer camps running for 4 weeks with over 250 juniors taking part.  During July the club also hosted a camp for Spanish students which was very successful with our Spanish friends integrating with our juniors both in a competitive tennis setting and socially.  To follow up on the July camps the club gave all camp participants a chance to practice and play tennis for 3 weeks in August by hosting supervised tennis every day from 10am to 1pm.  This proved very successful with over 100 juniors playing tennis throughout the weeks.
Outside of the club our competitive juniors were busy competing with Ireland’s best in tournaments all over Ireland and abroad.  All roads lead to the Irish Junior Open which was held in Fitzwilliam over the last week and a half. With Simon Carr out injured for a couple of weeks and Ammar Elamin away playing in Prague at a Tennis Europe U-14 event our hopes of success rested on juniors who competed well all summer.  Ciaran and Niamh Nolan, Jamie Battle, Emer Murphy and Anna Jones all went with hopes of doing well in their perspective age groups.  First up in qualifiers was Jamie Battle in Under 16 boys singles who came up against a top player in the first round and was unlucky to finish on the losing side.  Jamie teamed up with Anna Jones in the mixed doubles Under 16 main draw – after a tough first round match which they won in 3 sets the pair faced the number one seeded pair and lost in two close sets.  Emer Murphy in under 14 girls singles qualifiers won her first round match comfortably and lost her second match in 3 sets.  Emer teamed up with her regular doubles partner from Dublin, Dearbhail Devally.  This team had a great year playing doubles last year under 12 and reached the semi- final here.  This year they competed well winning a round and losing in the second round.  Both Jamie and Emer have another year in their perspective age groups in 2016.
Anna Jones (girls under 16), Ciaran Nolan (boys under 16) and Niamh Nolan (girls under 18) all faced seeded players in the main draw first round. First up was Anna Jones in Girls under 16 singles where she faced the no 5 seeded player Cora Moloney who to people in the know was fancied to win this event.  Anna played very strongly and showed why she had a big summer winning events and competing strongly all year but lost on a tight scoreline of 7-5 6-2.  Cora went on to win the Girls under 16 singles event beating the no 1, 3 and 4 seeded players enroute.  As mentioned Anna partnered Mullingar player Jamie in the mixed doubles – in the Girls doubles she teamed up with Caoimhe O’Reilly winning a round and losing in the second round.  Ciaran Nolan playing in the boys under 16 singles played the no 5 seeded player also and can count himself unlucky with this draw as he probably needed to get a few matches under his belt to show where he is.  However after a slow start lost the first set 6-1 but came back strong and started to play his tennis in the second which he unfortunately narrowly lost 7-5.  It shows a level of commitment to his sport as Ciaran was just finished his singles match in Dublin when he jumped into a car to race down to line out for an under 16 Hurling championship match for Clonkill v Raharney. (won this one).  Singles over for this year but more tennis to be played as he teamed up with David Cullen from Dublin in the Boys Doubles under 16 event.  An unseeded pairing who play a great form of doubles & won the first two rounds before meeting the no 3 seeds and this gave Ciaran a chance to revenge his singles loss.  In a close encounter Ciaran and his partner came through to reach the semi-final 6-3, 6-4.  No 1 seeds up next in the semi-final where they faced Thomas Brennan and Finlay McFadden – losing to the eventual winners of the title on a scoreline of 6-2, 6-4.
Niamh Nolan played the no 3 seeded player in the first round and while competing well lost on a scoreline of 6-2, 6-3.  Her opponent Julie reached the final where she narrowly lost to the no. 1 seeded player.  Niamh teamed up with her mixed doubles and Girls doubles partners in the Under 18 events losing in round 1 of the mixed, winning a round in girls doubles before losing to the no. 3 seeded pairing.
All these players again played their tennis in a very competitive but sportsman like manner.  They represent their club in a very positive way and can be very proud of their efforts over the summer and of course during the year.  Mullingar Tennis Club wish them all well for the future and believe that other junior members look up to these players as role models.

Junior News – Update 20th July

While the seniors were busy on Sunday the juniors were busy on Saturday for Longford Open junior finals day. Congrats to Jamie Battle who won both the Under 18 and 16 singles titles and teamed up with his under 16 opponent Hugh McCullen to win the under 18 doubles. Lizzie Sitko won the Under 14 girls singles even though she is still under 12. Again well done to all Mullingar junior players who competed in this event.
Another Mullingar junior player to compete and represent her club well was Anna Jones who travelled to Galway last week for the Connacht junior open – Anna who works very hard at her tennis deserved to win the under 16 event while also narrowly losing the under 18 final.

The International Tennis circuit comes to Ireland for the next couple of weeks, with Senior, Under 18 and Under 14 events taking place in venues around Ireland. This week, there is an ITF under 18 event in Malahide tennis club with qualifying on last weekend – Mullingar’s Niamh Nolan won two qualifying matches before narrowly losing 7-6 6-2 to number one seeded Latvian opponent. Best of luck to Niamh’s brother Ciaran Nolan who received a wild card into the main event and is competing during the week.
Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club hosts the annual FBD Irish Mens Open this week, and club member Simon Carr has received a wild card into the main draw of this event. This is a great opportunity for Simon to gain valuable experience in a professional tournament, and we wish him the best of luck.

Parks summer tennis camps are on at the moment and we are currently in week 3 of 4 – there is limited availability for week 4 which takes place from 27th to 31 st July. If interested contact Fergus on 0831079982.

August tennis for juniors – we encourage all our juniors to play the game – so to that extent for first 3 weeks in august there will be supervised tennis for all juniors between 10am and 1pm. All you have to do is sign the junior in and for €2 there will be supervised play and mini tournaments. No supervise tennis on the August bank holiday Monday but the programme will run from Tuesday 4th to Friday 21st July weekdays. All our juniors welcome.

Anna Jones 2nd from left at Munster Open

The junior tournament season is now well underway, and many of our juniors have been competing all around the country. Anna Jones was the winner in Sundays Well in Cork at the Munster Junior Open in the Girls U16 A singles event, and was also the runner up in the U18 Girls doubles.  Anna and clubmate Niamh Nolan were also key members of the victorious Malahide Ladies team which recently won the Class 1 section of the Dublin Tennis League.  Well done to both, and to all our other junior members who are competing in Junior Open events around the country.
