Colm started playing tennis when he was 7 years old in Castlepollard close to Mullingar. He was subsequently invited to join Mullingar Tennis and Badminton Club as a teenager by the late great stalwart of the club, Michael Creighton (RIP) and he has been with the club ever since.
He represented both Mullingar Tennis and Badminton Club and County Westmeath on tennis teams during the 1990’s, winning numerous open titles including the Connacht Open Singles title and Doubles Championship title (1996), as well as winning the Cavan Open title for three years in a row (1994, 1995 and 1996). Colm played on the same Westmeath tennis team as Ireland’s Davis Cup captain and honorary life member of our club, Garry Cahill.
He is a fully qualified Tennis Ireland and ITF licensed coach, completing his accreditation in July 2010 at DCU in Dublin. Since then he has been working with the VEC in Westmeath as well as being involved in schools tennis initiatives in over 10 schools in the Midlands. In addition, Colm has also been involved with both Kilbeggan Tennis Club and Grange Tennis Club and for the last few years has been assisting Fergus Murphy provide top quality coaching at Mullingar Tennis and Badminton Club.
Colms’ favourite tennis player is Roger Federer because he is the complete tennis player and athlete. His favourite quote is “Be original because an original is always worth more than a copy!!”
