Mullingar’s adopted Spanish student Gari Suarez, who is here for the summer, did the club proud by getting to the Men’s A singles final and narrowly lost to Mathew McCann, an experienced veteran from Enniskillen, who has represented Ireland in over 35 events. Well done to Gari, who is a lovely young man and has integrated himself well into our club over the last three summers.
In the Men’s A doubles – Fergus Murphy and David Cornally beat Eoin Corbett and Colm Murphy 7-6,4-6,6-4. In the Men’s over 40 doubles Eamonn Kilmartin and Colm Murphy came back from the brink to win a thrilling 3 setter 1-6 6-4 6-4. They were 4-1 down in the third but used all their experience and skill to keep their heads and come out on top in this the last match of the day to finish in style on a lovely day in Longford tennis club
Mixed doubles A final saw Anne Bergin and Eoin Corbett finish runner up to Sonia Hateboer and Mathew McCann in a very competitive final. Anne Bergin and Margaret Treacy teamed up to win ladies O/40 doubles against Longford opponents.
As always Longford open is a pleasure for all our players to compete as it is a friendly club and very welcoming, particularly on a Friday and Sunday finals day when there is a BBQ which everyone enjoys and the whole event really helps to cement relations between Longford and other local clubs especially Mullingar Tennis Club.
